Case study #115: NARUWASCO, Kenya

Nakuru County in Kenya shows the way to develop water accountability
among its rural population using our smart meters.

Adept supplies two Electromagnetic Flowmeters to the Nakuru Rural water and sanitation company, NARUWASCO, Kenya, through our customer Kinetics Engineering, Nairobi.

Nakuru is a county in Kenya situated to the northwest of Nairobi in the Great Rift Valley. Nakuru Rural Water and Sanitation Company Limited (NARUWASCO) is a Water Service Provider under the County Government of Nakuru and the Rift Valley Water Services Board.

Established in 2006, the company’s primary objective is to provide clean water and sanitation services in the region. NARUWASCO’s area of coverage is over 7000 sq. km. with a population of over 1.1 million. At present, they serve about 350,000 people through 23,000 connections supplying a total of 23,000 m2 of water per day.NARUWASCO is doing a great job by tapping various water resources and ensuring equitable water distribution in the region.

This has helped local, particularly rural population, to get access to clean water. As a result, waterborne diseases in these areas have significantly reduced and people don’t have to travel long distances to fetch water, and waste time and efforts.

Challenges

In spite of doing a good job to ensure equitable distribution of clean water on time, NARUWASCO is facing a challenge of Non-revenue Water (NRW). Out of their total daily water distribution, the quantum of non-revenue water is almost 64% according to the estimate of NARUWASCO. This also poses a challenge to understand the usage patterns based on various metrics such as peak hours of consumption, consumption according to localities, seasonal changes, if any, etc.

To overcome these challenges, the NARUWASCO management decided to install Water Meters/Flowmeters at two main locations for the pilot project. The first was at Nguzo Natural Springs, Nakuru city and the second, at Turasha Treatment Works, Gigil Town. To initiate the process, they called for bids from international players for the supply as well as erection and commissioning of two Flowmeters.

Solution

After carefully understanding the requirement, the experts at Adept recommended using our proven model of the Electromagnetic Flowmeter, MagBP 6440.

We won this international bid due to our technical competence and proven experience in catering to water supply schemes. Our installation references across the world, especially in Kenya and other African countries were also considered while awarding us the contract.

We recommended the use of two units consisting of one unit each of DN 300 and DN 600. MagBP 6440 Flowmeters offer several advantages such as,

Remote readings – Being smart meters, remote readings are easily possible. One does not have to travel for taking readings on a daily basis.

Connectivity – Adept smart meters can be connected to other ERP Systems and come with a Smartlit IoT platform, which offers real-time data monitoring and a billing feature as well.

Reliability – Adept Flowmeters have proven their reliability for outdoor applications. They can withstand harsh weather and have a long life due to good corrosion resistance.

Low Maintenance – The battery life of Adept Flowmeters is 10 years, and there is practically no requirement of maintenance.

Accuracy – Adept Flowmeters are completely calibrated in our factory before dispatch ensuring precision and accuracy in readings.

Adept helps public water distribution system in Kenya to cut down on non-revenue water through accurate measurement of water consumption in real time.

Benefits

NARUWASCO intends to cut down up to 30% of non-revenue water within one year of the implementation of the project.

The entire data reading process is centralized, automated and is in real time, which will allow easy control over water distribution and better water management.

Better planning and utilisation of available water in the time of crises

Data can be used for future planning resulting in a more methodical approach to planning.

Reliable technology from Adept will ensure minimum maintenance requirements and support is available 24×7.

The Flowmeters are now operational and are functioning as per the customer’s expectations.
