A state water board, one of the largest users of our Smartlit App, leverages its full potential for effective water management.

The once parched regions of Gujarat are now witnessing water adequacy.
The transformation in the last two decades is not only attributed to the Narmada canal, but to effective water management as well.

Gujarat Water Supply and Sewerage Board (GWSSB) is responsible for the regulation of water supply and sewerage services in the state of Gujarat. With the dedicated efforts of nearly two decades, GWSSB is successful in creating water infrastructure in the parched areas of Saurashtra and North Gujarat. This feat was achieved with the help of multiple government bodies, NGOs and the participation of the locals.

The area receives water from the Sardar Sarovar Dam via the Narmada canal, which was completed around the year 2008. The Saurashtra area is like an inverted saucer and hence water from the Narmada canal is lifted at a height of 69 meters at Dhanki near Gandhinagar. The lifted water then flows through pipelines to reach Saurashtra and parts of North Gujarat creating a water network reaching up to the village level. The distribution at the local level is managed by ‘Pani Samitis’ for drinking water and the Water Users’ Associations for the distribution of irrigation water.

Water is crucial for the socioeconomic transfor-mation of the region and GWSSB along with other bodies is doing a great job. It is one of the most successful experiments of effective water management through the participation of all the stakeholders.

Challenges

The entire project revolved around the concept of developing water accountability among end-users by making them pay for what they use and maintaining the infrastructure in their respective villages. This called for measuring water at every discharge point of the water network.

Considering the vast nature of the project, our project engineering team conducted a survey of the region. They also interacted with the engineering teams of Excelsource and GWSSB to understand their expectations. Our team realised the multiple challenges arising out of the scale and nature of the project.

  The project was spread over an area of almost 50,000 sq. km., with canals and pipelines running like arteries over the entire region. Flowmeters of varied sizes were required to be installed at multiple locations.

  Measuring water at every discharge point of the water network for effective control and trouble shooting from a central location was essential.

  Real-time, 24×7 access to meter readings with the help of a robust software and easy-to-navigate, user-friendly interface/dashboards was expected. Multiple stakeholders were required to access data simultaneously.

  Reliable after-sales service and instant availability of spares were essential to restrict downtime to the minimum.

In all, GWSSB engineers were looking for reliable technology and a credible company to entrust the project responsibility.

Solution

We have a long-standing business association with Excelsource and they were confident while recommending our complete Flow Instrumentation Solution to GWSSB. However, GWSSB wanted to be sure and only after a through verification of our credentials, entrusted us with the responsibility. Our engineers recommended the following:

  GPRS enabled, Ultrasonic Flowmeters Model UFM 6740

Adept UFM 6740 flowmeter is proven for its performance in outdoor and harsh environments and is tamper-proof. It does not have moving parts and the flow path is free of any obstruction. The ultrasonic technology is proven for ensuring accurate readings and consistency in readings over a long period without requiring frequent calibration.

  Smartlit IoT Platform with GPRS communication

Adept Smartlit is useful to retrieve data from Flowmeters installed at remote sites. Smartlit is a proven IoT platform developed after years of our experience in software development and SCADA solutions for providing automation solutions for flow instrumentation.

We have installed more than 500 units of UFM 6740 of sizes ranging from DN 80 to DN 300 at various locations. The entire supply is through Excelsource.

About Smartlit

  Adept has developed Smartlit to retrieve data from Flowmeters installed at remote sites.

  The mode of communication can be wired (Ethernet) or wireless (GPRS, NB IoT, LoRaWAN).

  The software is used to collect, view and print data.

  Through the compilation of such data, it is possible to understand the usage pattern and take corrective measures for optimising the usage of precious resources.

  2G enabled SIM card is placed in every Flowmeter. This module sends the data directly to the Adept server.

  Through the unique login credentials provided to individual customers, they can access their Flowmeter data from anywhere.

By using Smartlit, GWSSB is able to monitor over 500 nos. of Adept Ultrasonic Flowmeters from a centralised location. It also helps in generating accurate billing in a time-bound manner.
