Case study #104: Saswad Nagar Parishad, Saswad

A progressive Nagar Parishad (City Council) makes effective use of Automatic Meter Reading System (AMR) from Adept for controlling
its water network.

Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is helping in even distribution, real-time control, timely billing and avoiding wastage of water at Saswad Nagar Parishad in India.

Saswad is a town in Pune district, 25 km away from Pune, situated on the banks of the Karha river. The place has a long history and is now rapidly developing due to industrialisation and a planned airport in the vicinity. Local administration of the town is taken care of by the Saswad Nagar Parishad which also takes care of drinking water supply. Its 1,50,000 population is dependent on a nearby lake for its water requirement. In spite being a part of western Maharashtra known for good rainfall, this particular area is constantly parched. The scarcity of water certainly calls for its careful distribution and use.

The water supply scheme of this town lifts raw water from a nearby lake which is then pumped to the water treatment plant. After proper treatment, it is further distributed and pumped to various UGRs (Underground Reservoirs) and OHT (Overhead Tanks) situated in different areas of the town.

In view of the above mentioned situation, efficient distribution of water, exercising precise control on the water network, ensure proper auditing and timely billing were essential. For this, Saswad Nagar Parishad contemplated that a Smart Metering System with SCADA can be the right answer and was on a lookout for a competent partner.

Challenges

In a systematic effort, Saswad Nagar Parishad had clearly outlined its project objectives. The major ones were as follows.

  Eliminate non-revenue water consumption

  Minimise customer complaints and disputes

  Ensure real-time data management

  Quickly and remotely identify leakages

  Ensure easy and remote reading

Improve accuracy of readings and billing

  Reduce maintenance costs

This called for Automatic Meter Reading ( AMR ) capabilities and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). Also, Saswad Nagar Parishad was looking for a competent instrumentation partner who can provide turnkey support. This included civil work, fabrication and cabling required for Flowmeter installation apart from the supply of the system. Once finalized, the project was time-critical.

Solution

Once on board, our team prepared all the project drawings and a clear action plan, so as to manage the entire project in the stipulated time schedule. In order to manage the entire water network effectively and efficiently, Adept team suggested a complete system consisting of the following.

Full bore Electromagnetic Flowmeters – Model MagFlow 6410 (13 nos.) These are used at various rising mains with GSM RTUs facilitating AMR

Battery-operated Ultrasonic Flowmeters – UFM 6740 (30 nos.) For use at various ESRs (Elevated Storage Reservoir) and GSRs (Ground Storage Reservoir) with inbuilt GSM RTUs facilitating AMR

Adept GSM based AMR is one of the most advanced solutions in the market. It can be easily connected to digital or analog output of our Electromagnetic Flowmeter model MagFlow 6410. Adept Ultrasonic Flowmeter model UFM 6740 comes with inbuilt GSM facility. The Flowmeters use available cellular networks for transmitting metering data to control centres. The self-powered unit transmits accumulated data each day. Users can find out exactly what is happening in their water supply network and react immediately to any crisis or alert condition. Along with the Flowmeters, Adept also supplied a robust SCADA system to effectively manage the water network. Adept also provided a complete support in installation and commissioning of the system.

About AMR/AMI System from Adept

Our advanced real-time Automatic Meter Reading and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMR/AMI) systems, along with comprehensive meter data management, provide accurate water measurement. These solutions are tailor-made to meet the specific requirements of each customer.

Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) are systems that measure, collect, and analyse water usage, and communicate with metering devices either on request or on a schedule. These systems include hardware, software, communications modems Meter Data Management (MDM) software. AMI extends the current Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) technology allowing commands to be sent toward for multiple purposes, including time-of-use information, demand-response actions, or remote service disconnects if automatic valves provided in conjunction with meters.

The Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) technology provides data on consumption, diagnostic and status from water metering devices. This data is then transferred to a central database for billing, troubleshooting and analysing. This saves utility providers the expense of periodic trips to each location for taking meter readings.

A progressive Nagar Parishad (City Council) makes effective use of Automatic Meter Reading System (AMR) from Adept for controlling its water network.

Benefits

With the installation of the entire system from Adept, Saswad Nagar Parishad is empowered in several ways. Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) capabilities are helping them to achieve precise control, exact measurement and real-time billing of water. Customised solutions and products from Adept meet the requirements and further help waterworks department to avoid water wastage and improve overall water metering management capabilities, thereby saving substantial money. The following distinct benefits are achieved by Saswad Nagar Parishad.

Savings / increased revenue

Drastic reduction in non-revenue water usage and accurate information on consumption helped increase revenue

Saving in the expenses incurred in periodic trips to each location for obtaining meter readings

More accuracy in billing and adherence to billing cycle help increasing revenue and maintain cash-flow

  Reduced maintenance costs

Improved leakage detection helps reduce water wastage

Improved water management

Statistical data improved the decision making process

Accurate, fair, transparent and timely billing

Availability of data that would be used for tackling crisis situations and for future strategic planning

Reduced the number of customer service calls and disputes

  Real-time data management
